Not that word again.
“Discipline is freedom. When you have discipline, you get what you want.”
- VENUS WILLIAMS
If the word discipline evokes bootcamp imagery that you’ve got no desire to sign up for, you’re not alone. One of the singular most helpful things you can do for yourself is figure out how to stay in a good mood. From that place, possibilities are almost limitless; a formerly closed off mind, begins to see the options in every corner. That's how you make it to meeting your goals. Getting to the good mood doesn’t always look or feel good. But the more we show up for ourselves, regardless of what we’re feeling, the more we feel better and trust ourselves. The accumulation of times we show up for ourselves is the discipline. And it doesn’t have to look the same every time.
Discipline is about creating systems for yourself that allow you to flow through them with relative ease. Systems that beckon us back so that we’re able to reach that place of sweet satisfaction with ourselves.
A good system makes space for the full spectrum of our day to day capabilities. For example, if the goal is to run a marathon by a specific date and you have monthly hormonal dips that make running damn near inconceivable, that consideration becomes a part of the plan. Perhaps active recovery is required during those times. A magnesium soak and a good movie. Even when you’re resting, you’re still making progress. The system you create has got to work for all of you, not just the moments when you're in the mood to take steps.
Having a coach for regular check-ins can be a valuable part of that system. We're accountability partners and provide new perspectives when doubts begin to surface. We create containers to help you cut through the noise so you can focus on the things that really matter.
